England level the ODI series after Australia’s horrendous collapse at Lord’s

England leveled the ODI series at 2-2 after beating Australia by 186 runs in a rain-affected match at Lord’s Stadium on Friday.

Chasing a 313-run victory in a reduced 39 overs, the Australians scored 126 in 24.4 overs as England made a rapid breakthrough into the top flight.

Not only was it England’s second-biggest ODI victory over an Ashes rival in terms of runs, but also Australia’s second ODI defeat at Lord’s Stadium in the last 25 years.

After being sent out, England posted 5-312 to the Home of Cricket, with skipper Brook (87 off 58 balls) doing most of the damage before Livingstone’s late onslaught (62 not off 27 balls).

Australian spinner Adam Zampa, returning to the starting XI after an illness-related setback, took two crucial wickets, while seamer Josh Hazlewood impressed with economy figures of 1-40 from eight overs.

However, Carse (3-36) and Archer (2-33) ensured Australia got no closer to the target, with Matthew Potts clearing the tail to finish with a career-best 4-38.

The Australians, who lost 10-58 in a disastrous collapse, were completely outclassed in every aspect of the game and a heavy defeat decided the fate of the series on Sunday in Bristol.

“We were a bit off today,” Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said during the post-match press conference.

– Fair game against England, they put a lot of pressure on us with the bat.

“They just completely outplayed us today… that’s cricket.”

The fourth ODI was reduced to 39-overs after a frustrating rain delay, with England openers Phil Salt and Duckett surviving an eight-over Powerplay after Marsh won the toss and elected to bowl first in overcast conditions.

Salt and England No. 3 Will Jacks departed in almost identical fashion, at one point handing full deliveries to Marnus Labuschagne, falling victim to Hazlewood and Marsh respectively.

In a moment of deja vu, Lord’s fans showered Australian wicketkeeper Josh Inglis with boos after they appealed for a catch from Brook, who, as it turned out, bounced.

Duckett partnered with his captain for 79 runs for the third wicket before playing a powerful shot against Zampa, hitting the leg side, to depart for 63 (62). Brook, who needed just 37 deliveries to reach his fifty, seemed destined for another century before going on a long run during which Glenn Maxwell took a phenomenal catch.

England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith raced to 39 before firing a fierce shot at point, with Livingstone providing some fireworks with the fatal deliveries.

Livingstone, who hit the boundary seven times, gave up 28 runs off Mitchell Starc’s final over to reach his fifty in just 25 deliveries, an ODI record at Lord’s. Meanwhile, England scored 12 sixes during the innings, another record at the iconic venue.

The Australian chase started promisingly, with openers Travis Head and Marsh combining for a quick 68-run partnership before the tourists lost 6-31 in a dramatic collapse as England’s bulls wreaked havoc on a difficult surface.

Head missed a straight one for 34 and Steve Smith moved him for 5 before Marsh grabbed a beauty off Jofra Archer that bounced and hit the top of stump. Carse scored twice in the 15th minute and Inglis made a regulation catch to cover before Labuschagne played a flawless 4-pointer.

Maxwell played a low shot against Archer for 2, which went to gloveman Smith, before Matthew Potts came back to clean up the tail, removing Sean Abbott, Alex Carey and Zampa in quick succession.

England spinner Adil Rashid, who was denied a marginal decision against Abbott, bowled Tailender Hazlewood for a duck and secured a resounding victory.

Earlier, Cricket Australia confirmed that all-rounder Cameron Green has been ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series following a back injury.

The fifth ODI between England and Australia will begin on Sunday at the County Ground in Bristol, with the first ball scheduled for 8pm AEST.
