Conor McGregor claimed that he was offered a sensational two-fight contract with one of boxing’s biggest current names, including a fight in the Octagon.
The UFC legend showed his mettle in 2017 when he headed to the ring to face the iconic Floyd Mayweather in a rare crossover fight. Since then we’ve been dying to see him back in the ring, so he’s reconnected with his childhood Crumlin Boxing Club.
He lost that fight to Mayweather after an impressive ten rounds, and now insists he will only agree to a similar deal if he is allowed to face the boxer in the UFC octagon. Now he says he has been in talks about a potential two-fight deal to face the great Terence Crawford.
Conor McGregor details multimillion-dollar fight talks with Terence Crawford
Last weekend, Conor McGregor attended the Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois gala at Wembley Arena and met Crawford at ringside with boxing supremo Turki Alalsheikh. The pair spoke briefly and it appears the fight between the pair was brought up.
“Crawford is very smart, he also has a wrestling background,” McGregor noted during a recent Kick for Duelbits broadcast. “You know they always talk to me about the attacks. I have already boxed a boxer and the best boxer in MMA is me.
“I generate the most [money]. We talked back and forth about a two-fight deal. The day after the fights, he calls Crawford before me. I call the phone and say, “Crawford, they’re talking about me and you; A two-fight deal, first MMA, then boxing.
“I know you have a lot of wrestling experience and balls the size of a Bengal tiger. They are asking for a fight and hundreds of millions will be at stake. “What’s going on?” I asked and he said, “I don’t feel like kicking Conor McGregor,” that’s what he said. You have to respect that.”
Terence Crawford’s promoters offered Conor McGregor a two-fight contract in 2020
This appears to be a different style for Crawford than he and his team had back in 2021, when they seemed willing to sign a two-fight deal. The boxer’s trainers were confident that he would win both fights, generating huge amounts of money in the process.
After headlining Madison Square Garden against Egidijus “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas in December 2019, promoter Bob Arum offered the pair a contract to compete first in the cage and then in the ring.
“We have an elite boxer in Terence Crawford fighting an elite MMA fighter in Conor McGregor under MMA rules,” Arum told ESPN at the time.
“Don’t you think that would be interesting and something the audience would want to see? I think it’s very realistic. Whenever they are ready, we are ready. We would have an MMA fight first if that was what they wanted.”
Conor McGregor plans to return to the UFC in 2025 after losing to Michael Chandler
After two years of preparations for his fight with Michael Chandler, McGregor missed his chance to fight the American this year. They were supposed to meet at UFC 303 in Las Vegas, but the Irishman broke his toe, which forced him to withdraw from the event.
Now Chandler is set to rematch Charles Oliveira at UFC 309 as he decides to step away from the fight after all this time. Meanwhile, last week on DAZN, McGregor noted that it is currently unlikely that he will fight in 2024.
“It will be 2025,” he replied to Ariel Helwani’s question. “We’ll see. The opponent I lined up has been chosen and that’s it. I take it upon myself and I manage. My job is to go to the gym and stay in shape. Whenever that happens and wherever it is, I will be 100% ready.
He wants Chandler to be his opponent, despite the booking of his fight with Oliveira. When asked who his next opponent would be, he replied: “Who knows, it doesn’t matter. Anyone, let’s see. I like that I’m Chandler. I wish him all the best and will see where this all leads.
